Late News: The remaining conviction was dropped against Mychal Bell on the basis of his being improperly tried as an adult. He remains vulnerable to being tried in Juvenile Court, and the others remain vulnerable to being tried in Adult Court. See more.

In a small still mostly segregated section of rural Louisiana, an all white jury heard a series of white witnesses called by a white prosecutor testify in a courtroom overseen by a white judge in a trial of a fight at the local high school where a white student who had been making racial taunts was hit by black students. The fight was the culmination of a series of racial incidents starting when whites responded to black students sitting under the “white tree” at their school by hanging three nooses from the tree. The white jury and white prosecutor and all white supporters of the white victim were all on one side of the courtroom. The black defendant, 17 year old Mychal Bell, and his supporters were on the other. The jury quickly convicted Mychal Bell of two felonies – aggravated battery and conspiracy to commit aggravated battery. Bell, who was a 16 year old sophomore football star at the time he was arrested, faces up to 22 years in prison.

Five other black youths await similar trials on attempted second degree murder and conspiracy charges.

Yes, you read that correctly. The rest of the story, which is being reported across the world in papers in China, France and England, is just as chilling.

The trouble started under “the white tree” in front of Jena High School. The “white tree” is where the white students, 80% of the student body, would always sit during school breaks.

In September 2006, a black student at Jena high school asked permission from school administrators to sit under the “white tree.” School officials advised them to sit wherever they wanted. They did.

The next day, three nooses, in the school colors, were hanging from the “white tree.” The message was clear. “Those nooses meant the KKK, they meant ‘Niggers, we’re going to kill you, we’re going to hang you till you die,'” Casteptla Bailey, mom of one of the students, told the London Observer.

The Jena high school principal found that three white students were responsible and recommended expulsion. The white superintendent of schools over-ruled the principal and gave the students a three day suspension saying that the nooses were just a youthful stunt. “Adolescents play pranks,” the superintendent told the Chicago Tribune, “I don’t think it was a threat against anybody.”

The African-American community was hurt and upset. “Hanging those nooses was a hate crime, plain and simple,” according to Tracy Bowens, mother of students at Jena High.

But blacks in this area of Louisiana have little political power. The ten person all-male government of the parish has one African-American member. The nine member all-male school board has one African American member. (A phone caller to the local school board trying to find out the racial makeup of the school board was told there was one “colored” member of the board). There is one black police officer in Jena and two black public school teachers.

Jena, with a population of less than 3000, is the largest town in and parish (county) seat of LaSalle Parish, Louisiana. There are about 350 African Americans in the town. LaSalle has a population of just over 14,000 people – 12% African-American.

This is solid Bush and David Duke Country – GWB won LaSalle Parish 4 to 1 in the last two elections; Duke carried a majority of the white vote when he ran for Governor of Louisiana. Families earn about 60% of the national average. The Census Bureau reports that less than 10% of the businesses in LaSalle Parish are black owned.

Jena is the site of the infamous Juvenile Correctional Center for Youth that was forced to close its doors in 2000, only two years after opening, due to widespread brutality and racism including the choking of juveniles by guards after the youth met with a lawyer. The U.S. Department of Justice sued the private prison amid complaints that guards paid inmates to fight each other and laughed when teens tried to commit suicide.

Black students decided to resist and organized a sit-in under the “white tree” at the school to protest the light suspensions given to the noose-hanging white students.

The white District Attorney then came to Jena High with law enforcement officers to address a school assembly. According to testimony in a later motion in court, the DA reportedly threatened the black protesting students saying that if they didn’t stop making a fuss about this “innocent prank I can be your best friend or your worst enemy. I can take away your lives with a stroke of my pen.” The school was put on lockdown for the rest of the week.

Racial tensions remained high throughout the fall.

On the night of Thursday November 30, 2006, a still unsolved fire burned down the main academic building of Jena High School.

On Friday night, December 1, a black student who showed up at a white party was beaten by whites. On Saturday, December 2, a young white man pulled out a shotgun in a confrontation with young black men at the Gotta Go convenience store outside Jena before the men wrestled it away from him. The black men who took the shotgun away were later arrested, no charges were filed against the white man.

On Monday, December 4, at Jena High, a white student–who allegedly had been making racial taunts, including calling African American students “niggers” while supporting the students who hung the nooses and who beat up the black student at the off-campus party–was knocked down, punched and kicked by black students. The white victim was taken to the hospital treated and released. He attended a social function that evening.
Six black Jena students were arrested and charged with attempted second degree murder. All six were expelled from school.

The six charged were: 17-year-old Robert Bailey Junior whose bail was set at $138,000; 17-year-old Theo Shaw – bail $130,000; 18-year-old Carwin Jones–bail $100,000; 17-year-old Bryant Purvis–bail $70,000; 16 year old Mychal Bell, a sophomore in high school who was charged as an adult and for whom bail was set at $90,000; and a still unidentified minor.

Many of the young men, who came to be known as the Jena 6, stayed in jail for months. Few families could afford bond or private attorneys.

Mychal Bell remained in jail from December 2006 until his trial because his family was unable to post the $90,000 bond. Theo Shaw has also remained in jail. Several of the other defendants remained in jail for months until their families could raise sufficient money to put up bonds.

The Chicago Tribune wrote a powerful story headlined “Racial Demons Rear Heads.” The London Observer wrote: “Jena is gaining national notoriety as an example of the new ‘stealth’ racism, showing how lightly sleep the demons of racial prejudice in America’s Deep South, even in the year that a black man, Barak Obama, is a serious candidate for the White House.” The British Broadcasting Company aired a TV special report “Race Hate in Louisiana 2007.”

The Jena 6 and their families were put under substantial pressure to plead guilty. Mychal Bell was reported to have been leaning towards pleading guilty right up until his trial when he decided he would not plead guilty to a felony.

When it finally came, the trial of Mychal Bell was swift. Bell was represented by an appointed public defender.

On the morning of the trial, the DA reduced the charges from attempted second degree murder to second degree aggravated battery and conspiracy. Aggravated battery in Louisiana law demands the attack be with a dangerous weapon. The dangerous weapon? The prosecutor was allowed to argue to the jury that the tennis shoes worn by Bell could be considered a dangerous weapon used by “the gang of black boys” who beat the white victim.

Most shocking of all, when the pool of potential jurors was summoned, fifty people appeared–every single one white.

The LaSalle Parish clerk defended the all white group to the Alexandria Louisiana Town Talk newspaper saying that the jury pool was selected by computer. “The venire [panel of prospective jurors] is color blind. The idea is for the list to truly reflect the racial makeup of the community, but the system does not take race into factor.” Officials said they had summoned 150 people, but these were the only people who showed up.
The all-white jury which was finally chosen included two people friendly with the District Attorney, a relative of one of the witnesses and several others who were friends of prosecution witnesses.

Bell’s parents, Melissa Bell and Marcus Jones, were not even allowed to attend the trial despite their objections, because they were listed as potential witnesses. The white victim, though a witness, was allowed to stay in the courtroom. The parents, who had been widely quoted in the media as critics of the process, were also told they could no longer speak to the media as long as the trial was in session. Marcus Jones had told the media “It’s all about those nooses” and declared the charges racially motivated.

Other supporters who planned a demonstration in support of Bell were ordered by the court not to do so near the courthouse or anywhere the judge would see them.

The prosecutor called 17 witnesses – eleven white students, three white teachers, and two white nurses. Some said they saw Bell kick the victim, others said they did not see him do anything. The white victim testified that he did not know if Bell hit him or not.

The Chicago Tribune reported the public defender did not challenge the all-white jury pool, put on no evidence and called no witnesses. The public defender told the Alexandria Town talk after resting his case without calling any witnesses that he knew he would be second-guessed by many but was confident that the jury would return a verdict of not guilty. “I don’t believe race is an issue in this trialI think I have a fair and impartial jury”

The jury deliberated for less than three hours and found Mychal Bell guilty on the maximum possible charges of aggravated second degree battery and conspiracy. He faces up to a maximum of 22 years in prison.

The public defender told the press afterwards, “I feel I put on the best defense that I could.” Responding to criticism of not putting on any witnesses, the attorney said “why open the door for further accusations? I did the best I could for my client, Mychal Bell.”

At a rally in front of the courthouse the next day, Alan Bean, a Texas minister and leader of the Friends of Justice, said “I have seen a lot of trials in my time. And I have never seen a more distressing miscarriage of justice than what happened in LaSalle Parish yesterday.” Khadijah Rashad of Lafayette Louisiana described the trial as a “modern day lynching.”

Tory Pegram with the Louisiana ACLU has been working with the parents for months. “People know if they don’t demand equal treatment now, they will never get it. People’s jobs and livelihoods have been threatened for attending Jena 6 Defense meetings, but people are willing to risk that. One person told me: ‘We have to convince more people to come rally with us…..What’s the worst that could happen? They fire us from our jobs? We have the worst jobs in the town anyway. They burn a cross on our lawns or burn down my house? All of that has happened to us before. We have to keep speaking out to make sure it doesn’t happen to us again, or our children will never be safe.'”

Whites in the community were adamant that there is no racism. “We don’t have a problem,” according to one. Other locals told the media “We all get along,” and “most blacks are happy with the way things are.” One person even said “We don’t have many problems with our blacks.”

Melvin Worthington, the lone African American school board member in LaSalle Parish said it all could have been avoided. “There’s no doubt about it,” he told the Chicago Tribune, “whites and blacks are treated differently here. The white kids should have gotten more punishment for hanging those nooses. If they had, all the stuff that followed could have been avoided.”

Hebert McCoy, a relative of one of the youths who has been trying to raise money for bail and lawyers, challenged people everywhere at the end of the rally when he said “You better get out of your houses. You better come out and defend your childrenbecause they are incarcerating them by the thousands. Jena’s not the beginning, but Jena has crossed the line. Justice is not right when you put on the wrong charges and then convict. I believe in justice. I believe in the point of law. I believe in accepting the punishment if I’m guilty. If I’m guilty, convict me and punishment, but if I’m innocent, no justice” and the crowd joined with him and shouted “no peace!”

What happened to the white guys? The white victim of the beating was later arrested for bringing a hunting rifle loaded with 13 bullets onto the high school campus and released on $5000 bond. The white man who beat up the black youth at the off-campus party was arrested and charged with simple battery. The white students who hung up the nooses in the “white tree” were never charged.

The people in Jena are fighting for justice and they need legal and financial help. Since the arrests, a group of family members have been holding well-attended meetings, and have created a defense fund–the Jena 6 Defense Committee. They have received support from the NAACP, the Louisiana ACLU and Friends of Justice.

What is next? The rest of the Jena 6 await similar trials. Theodore Shaw is due to go on trial shortly. Mychal Bell is scheduled to be sentenced July 31. If he gets the maximum sentence he will not be out of prison until he is nearly 40. Meanwhile, the “white tree” outside Jena High sits quietly in the hot sun.

    Hello,
I am in Washington DC, a Communications Intern for Advancement Project.

    This case is simply appalling.
I wrote a blog on the Jena 6 yesterday which should be up on the Advancement Project website later on today.

I walked away from work yesterday feeling sick. Researching the history of race tensions in Jena Louisiana I sorted through so many photos of lynching and burnings. They were horrific.

And still today I cant shake off a feeling of disgust and sickness to what is unfolding in Jena today.

I feel like I have stepped back in time.

The events blew me away. I am also suprised by the lack of domestic media coverage on this story.

    WHERE IS OUR MEDIA?

Although the BBC did a expose, where is the outcry on US media outlets? I am proud to be a blogger right now- it seems much of the media hits for Jena 6 are from people taking this into their own hands and spreading the word.

I am still trying to find the best way to get involved. I have called NBC and the ACLU and emailed The Jena 6 Defense Committee. I want to be as active as I can in this critical moment in Civil Rights and American history. If anyone klnows of any good organizations that are taking volunteers, let us know. I am going to take this as far as I can. I am planning on flying to Jena for the trial. I feel too sickened by these injustices to let this play out. The LAACLU does not have a link on their splash page to the Jena 6 case the last time I checked. I have emailed them and am awaiting response.

Listen to my interview with Alan Bean, an activist who was in the courtroom during the trial

    http://www.letstalkhonestly.com/raceinamerica.html

On June 28 2007 a young black defendant Mychal Bell was found guilty of aggravated assault against a young white man by an all white jury despite conflicting testimony from witnesses. Alan Bean talks about the things below:

The weekend before the assault took place nooses were hung on a tree.

The Prosecutor threatened black students about protesting the nooses

A black man was assaulted, no charges were brought up.

During the trial the public defender put up no defense after the prosecution rested it’s case.

This is from “Democracy Now” July 17:

In Jena Louisiana, two men have been arrested after they ran over a church sign at a black church. Jena is the town where six black teenagers were charged last year with attempted murder for engaging in a schoolyard fight after the students found three nooses hanging from a tree at the school. Last week the NAACP held a meeting at the Antioch Baptist Church to discuss the case of the Jena 6 and the racial atmosphere in the town. Hours later police say John Sanderson and Jerry Bufkin ran over a sign at the church. The men have been charged with criminal damage to property. The church’s pastor called the actions a hate crime.

Of ‘White Trees’, Black Boys and Jena, Louisiana [col. writ. 7/21/07] (c) ’07 Mumia Abu-Jamal

If you asked me two weeks ago if I’ve ever heard the name of a little town in Louisiana called ‘Jena’, I would’ve drawn a blank.

    Jena? Never heard of it.

It made me think of the ill-fated Palestinian village called Janin, that Israel crushed into oblivion several years ago.

I think the incumbent president’s daughter has that name (with and additional ‘n’).

    But, that’s it.

When a friend sent me several internet articles about recent events there, I was, quite frankly, flabbergasted.

I was astonished to learn that today, in the first decade of the 21st century, in Jena High School, there is still a ‘white tree’, called that not because the leaves are white, but because it is a generous giver of shade, and only white students sit under it.

In Sept. 2006, a young student named Kenneth Purvis asked the school principal for permission to sit under the ‘white tree.’ The principal answered that he could sit where he liked.

    So, they did.

The next day, the ‘white tree’ was festooned with three nooses, in school colors.

In the South (or the North, for that matter), nooses have one clear meaning — they are threats of death.

People naturally got riled up, angry, or scared.

Jena’s High School principal looked into the matter, found the three white students responsible, and recommended that they be expelled.

The school superintendent felt otherwise, rescinded the expulsion, and instead recommended a 3 – day suspension. Speaking to the Chicago Tribune, the superintendent said, ” Adolescents play pranks. I don’t think it was a threat against anybody.”

(Perhaps he meant anybody important – or white)

For Jena’s Black community, this was but the latest slap in the face.

Black students at the high school decided to resist by holding a sit-in under the ‘white tree’ to protest the light suspensions given to the 3 white noose-hangers.

When word got out about the pending sit-in, the local DA came to a Jena school assembly, with several cops to threaten the students who dared to think they could do what people did some 40 years ago throughout the South (before the so-called ‘New South’). He told them if they didn’t stop making a fuss about this ‘prank’ he could be “your worst enemy.” To make the point plain, he told the teen gathering, ” I can take away your lives with a stroke of a pen.”

Several days later, a white Jena student, who reportedly made racist taunts, including calling Black students ‘niggers’, got knocked down, punched and kicked. The boy was taken to the hospital, treated and released. That very night, he was well enough to attend a public event.

Within days six Black Jena students were arrested and charged with attempted second degree murder. All six were also immediately expelled.

The 6 teens were given bails set from $70,000 to $139,000.

Bail at these ranges could’ve just as easily been set at $1 million, for they were at rates that none of the local parents could afford. That meant, of course, that all of the accused were held in jail for months, awaiting trial.

And if money for bail was out of reach, what about money for attorneys?

Again — out of the question.

That meant that public defenders were appointed by the court.

For one of the accused, Mychal Bell, this meant little better than no counsel at all, for his trial was soon decided by an all-white jury, who promptly convicted him of aggravated second degree assault, battery and conspiracy.

Bell now awaits sentencing which may put the teenager in prison for the next 22 years.

The public defender never challenged the all-white jury pool, put on no evidence, and didn’t call a single defense witness.

The law of aggravated assault requires the use of a deadly weapon. What was the weapon?

    Tennis shoes.

Families and friends of the Jena 6 are organizing against this case, and are also being threatened by the local establishment. One woman told Louisiana ACLU member, Tory Pegram, “We have to convince more people to come rally with us…..What’s the worse that could happen? They fire us from our jobs? We have the worst jobs in the town anyway. They burn a cross on our lawns or burn down my house? All of that has happened to us before. We have to keep speaking out to make sure it doesn’t happen to us again, or our children will never be safe.”

I am appalled & sick after reading this story! How sick and out of touch have we become as a society that Lindsey Lohan & Paris Hilton get press and nobody even KNOWS what is going on in this country that matters.
I commend you for putting this story out there and urge all Americans, Black & White to pay attention..it is sad to say that “nothing ever really changes”. I for one will offer whatever support I can to these young men and their families. As an African-American I can honestly say I am not surprised…as an American I am appalled.

  6. 6 Latoya Williams August 6, 2007 at 1:16 pm

My name is Latoya Williams, it is in outrage that these type of crimes are still happening, but I from the South and anyone from the south knows that the face of our nation has a couple of sides:
    1. to help immigrants, I dont mind helping people when in need. But as a nation we have people still suffering from the devastion of Katrina, and living inadquete housing, where phemildhide are within the walls of the trailers that residents live in, which tells me the levels must be really high in order for FEMA not to put the online and sale them to residents living across the United States. I love my country, but we have lost a since of self as a nation., and of God.
    2. to fight a war that has being on since before the time of Christ, and if you are anyone with a little bible knowledge it will never end.
please do not say I dont support the troops becuase I myself am veteran and my husband was oversees.
    3. Turning blind eye to matters such as this, where injustices contine to happen on a daily basis, this was nnot reported to 20/20 or larger news stations, I do not know. but what I do know is that We need to change the focus of our nation to the people who make up the United States.

I will continue to pray for your situation and ask God to move in a special way, I will also bring this to the attention of my church and a local netwroks here within Michigan.

A little town like Jena, Louisiana needs to know that the town that they live in was never for them, nor for their ansentors and they have went to far with the KKK bullshit and that none of them are pure white, they are just a form of cancer that has eaten away at their skin and that’s why they look like. And to the principle of that horrible school, you must have God in your life to see a child/person and not color. They need more people like you to live in Jena. Their ansestors stole it from the Natives, and they are trying to treat people people like dogs that have bilt this country from the ground up for over 400 years for free and then whatever ideals they had or their culture you stole it and made it all yours. If you have that much hate in your heart, why don’t the whole little town of Jena and surrounding areas go fight people who like to fight so they can show you how to pick on someone who is not doing you anything. Ask the older people in your family how white people are really treated on the out side of the U.S., and do other countires really like the white race. No! They do not like the white race becasue 90% of yall are theives liers and murders, oh don’t forget rapist. No other country trust the white man, because of his history that he presented to the world. I know none of the white men and women of Jena and surrounding areas are brave enough to go and fight in the middle east where those people can shot and blow all of the people in the back woods of Jena up and they don’t mind dying, but all of you do. I tell you, America has a lot to repaying to do to Black people; Native Americans and to other races and America is slowly dealing it’s death card out to herself. People of other races who once loved this country will not keep being abuse by the white people in this country and I am so glad that the Mexicans are slowly taking back the south western part of America. Now, go fight that war. And to those of you that are trying to help I wish and pray that God gives yall the strenght to deal with those types of people and their one way belifs.

An Open Letter to The Jena Six
    By Joseph Young
    Dear Mychal,
I keep thinking about you. I also think about the other young men who have fallen prey to racial hatred. Its existence, more than a century after Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, makes me fearful for your life, your safety. The freedom that it promised was tenuous.
It was not entirely without strength. In the proclamation, issued three years into the Civil War, Lincoln declared, at the urging of Frederick Douglass, that the former slaves would be accepted into the Union Army and navy, making the liberated the liberator. By the war’s end, almost 200,000 black servicemen had fought for freedom and saved the Union.
Your generation, like mine, is being denied this freedom our ancestors risked life and limb, so that we may live as free men and women. You can call them heroes, but they were not thinking of themselves when they displayed courage and self-sacrifice on the battlefields of America.
Today, then, to guard against the impending doom of American civilization, is not only opposition to racism, but also the determination to secure the civil rights for which many Americans have paid a heavy toll. Of all the civil rights, the right to learn is the surest prevention from ignorance. If at any time, children are instructed with anti-black bias; and they are made to learn what is not true and what the dominate forces in their lives want them to think is true; there’re guilty of impeding the march toward American civilization.
Astonishing as it is that those students would hang three nooses from the tree at Jena High School as a racial taunt, including calling the black students ‘niggers’; you would think that America would never again want to see a black person hang from a tree, or behind bars. The nooses show that we, Americans, have not come that far from the cruelties and barbarity of slavery as we think. (Between 1882 and 1968, an estimated 5,000 people, mostly blacks, met their deaths at the hands of lynch mobs.) And this also is an unfortunate comment upon the belief that our schools are the great path to progress, the great equalizer. If our schools are the great path to progress, they must be the freest of our institutions, opposed bitterly to the attempt to indoctrinate our children with racial hatred.
Well, Mychal, as you and the others wait behind bars because of a racially biased and an over zealous prosecutor, it is for us on the outside to continue the unfinished work of our fathers, to set you free. All of you were willing to fight racial hatred, and you know people of goodwill are beside you. If the Confederacy couldn’t stop us, the opposition we now face will fail. When history is written your detractors will get little note, but you will be remembered for standing up for what’s best of the American creed. You are part of a legacy in which our slave forebears fought to birth a new nation. You, Mychal, are a child of America’s destiny.
It was Martin Luther King who said if a man doesn’t have something worth dying for he is not fit to live. Freedom is worth dying for. Justice is worth dying for. Equality is worth dying for. A child is worth dying for, because our job as parents is to protect children.
Mychal, when you feel complete frustration and your narrow jail cell is closing in on your spirit and mind; remember the message of the old slave preacher to his flock whose resistance to oppression might have been completely in vain:
“You are created in God’s image. You are not slaves, you are not ‘niggers’; you are God’s children.”
    Godspeed Mychal,
Your brother in the struggle, Joseph

I am so angry with this story. I cannot believe it. I am a parent that works in the school system for children with disabilities. I thought that was a tough battle, but I could clearly see there are worsier battles to fight than children with disabilites. I have four children and I teach them that everyone is the same , no matter what color they are and what kind of disability they have. I am very outraged that there are people out there that still commend this kind of behavior. And then you have people wondering why our world is the way it is. HELLO, its the parents raising these children. I do not catorize people everyone is the same but when I hear trash like this , the people who did this is white trash. And I am a white mother. My heart goes out for those colored boys and their families. If there is anything I can do please someone let me know.I would love to help in this fight for those boys. I live in Louisianna and I am embarrassed to say this is my home. PLEASE let me help . GOD BLESS YOU PEOPLE!!!

This is a modern day lynching and I am not surprised that it is not in mainstream media because of all the “isms” that exist TODAY! Let us cry out through our elected officials in D.C., our celebrities, our churches and anyone who will listen. Let’s attend the rally in September to show support and/or do what we can to demonstrate that this kind of sickness and hate has consequences. While I Know God will judge, we can still keep these kids out of prison by a show of intolerance for this criminal behavior on the part of the DA and racism in thre Jena justice system..

  13. 13 Jennifer R. August 28, 2007 at 6:46 am

As an American in the year 2007 with children myself I am completely broken hearted by what continues to be accepted by this country. Are we sheeps being led to slaughter? We continue to watch media that keeps the focus on celebrities and their problems instead of how to change and what is really important. We sit in our homes with the big screen T.V.’s and our processed food and judge the rest of the world. How dare us? What happened to the “Land of the Free, the Home of the Brave”? These children who are sitting in jail on charges that some rapist don’t even get are suffering the most heinous injustice. I live in Long Island, New York, I have two children and a wonderful man who’s heritage is African American. I am mostly from Irish decent. I want to fight for The Jena 6. I want to stand up and say enough is enough. Not because of the Civil War and the fact that slavery was abolished…SLAVERY SHOULD NEVER OF HAPPENED! But it did and continues to hurt good people, continues to haunt many intelligent men and women. People say racism doesn’t exist but I still hear the “Black” jokes and the comments made about “those people”. Cars being pulled over and searched because of a neighborhood your in or the color of your skin. Students not being able to sit under a “white tree”. Oh you might say “but not in my backyard, this happened in Lousiana”. Yes and so did Katrina and Barbara Bush stated that staying in the Football Astrodome was probably a nice change for the low income families that were devestated by Katrina. This is happening in the Good ole USA, which is in your backyard.
Just so people understand where I am coming from: My father served in the United States Marine Corp, my mother in the United States Air Force, my grandfather in the British Royal Air Force during WWII and other family members in most branches of the military…But I have my own mind and I know the difference between right and wrong and what my family wanted to defends was Justice, Equality, Freedom for all not just those good ole white boys in the USA.
I believe in Justice but what justice is there when a black man sits in jail for something he may or may not have been involved in and where was the jury of his peers? I believe in Equality, especially for all races, religons, sexual identity…WOMEN…and true freedom for all, especially in the year 2007..
God Bless the Jena 6, you are in my prayers.

What is the President of Ameriican is doing about this? I guess he is too busy interferring in other’s countries business when he support to seeing to it racism is not tolorating amore in this great U.S.A. I am confused and dumpfounded to even hear of such things going on yet. How can we say together we stand to fight torrorism when we are still being terrorize in our own country by our own people. White, black don’t own this county if anyone suppose to putting nosses on trees should be the red Indians. Opps, I guess the white people pushed so far back that the poor people are still fighting to get out of their holes they have been push into. I hate to say all this because they do have alot of good white people that have stood with black people, it is just the few Ignorant ones with very little brains that are so scare because of what the educated blacks are capable of accomplishing. That day will come.

  15. 15 Kathy -Georgia September 5, 2007 at 8:31 am

Although, I only recently heard about this through a friend, and he has told me that had listened to the news. I am appalled at the power we have given our public officials. So many of them have no right to even judge another person or before they take a long hard look at themselves. These things happen all over the United States of America because those we have given power to have taken upon themselves to do exactly what they want. As I was told by a lawyer I was trying to hire for my friend, “I don’t know the players of the game in that County, so I am afraid I would not be much help”. Well exactly that, it is not a game. These are people’s lives we are dealing with here. Do we all need to learn to play games? What happened to honesty? Integrity? Why do those in power think they are above the law? Not only is this happening in Louisianna, it is happening in our towns. In Georgia, it is happening in our jail systems as we speak. We have given too much power to these people, they feel they are beyond and above the law. They will answer to God. They will reap what they sow.
But what I don’t understand is why all the corruption is not exposed and who we can talk to about such corruption. I feel that there are not too many avenues for us as individuals to take ….its just the squeaky wheel that gets the grease. As far as what has happened to Jews or Blacks, we cannot make up for the past as caucasions. But just so you know, most of the Unites States is made up of people thatmigrated from Europe. My ancestors originated from near Poland and came to the United States. It doesn’t matter what race. We are all people. I would like to see the media get involved more with all facets of our government. Most goes unnoticed because there is no one to speak up for those especially in the jail. I have an issue right now that I would like to bring to the media’s attention. But it not only involves one jail in particular but probably all. YOU always have some good and bad in every situation. I pray that justice will be served and lives would be taken serious….Remember We are the People? LISTEN TO US.

  16. 16 Serena September 6, 2007 at 4:14 pm

Hi my name is Serena and I am a student at Lincoln Tech in Atlanta Georgia. When I first heard about what happen I said to myself I thought all of this was over. Martin Luther King die for this country so we can have a better life. And now this stuff is happening. My heart goes out to all of the family member of the six boys and if I had the money to give I would. But I am trying to get my school to help out as much as possible. But one thing I can say is that us blacks we don’t stick together. And thats how come all the other race just run over us.We always say what we going to do but we never do anything. We talk the talk but never walk the walk. Its time for us to stand up for what is right and for us to come together. NO JUSTICE NO PEACE We are the people and we need to be heard.

  17. 17 Symone' September 9, 2007 at 11:51 am

Hello, My name is Symone’ and I believe what Serena said is true. Blacks are always saying how they will stick beside their friends and family through thick and thin but where are my so called family members or my so called friends when someone is beating on me, or when someone is being disrespectful towards me? That’s a good question but I dont have the answer. We always talking about what we would do for our race but when the oppurtunity finally shows its face, we arent there to see it. We arent afraid to get in trouble and sell drugs on the street for a name but we are scared outta our minds to go up against the strong white people who hold down the politics. Our race doesnt stick together. Everytime you watch the news, its another black person in jail, another black person raping someone, another black person doing something. When will it end? Martin Luther King did not die so we could do this to each other. The words “break each other” is nowhere in the “I Have A Dream” speech but thats exactly what we’re doing. Whites (no harm to any) believe that they are better than us because they can afford things we cant. If thats the case, why are so many whites trying to be black? We talk the talk which makes the think that no matter what we gone have their backs but we dont walk the walk. When trouble comes towards us, we turn around and walk away and im sick of it. Im gone stand my ground, Just like Rosa Parks, I will not move for the white man to walk all over me. They can walk around me but they can never walk over me. I am going to take up for my family no matter what. I cant do it by myself. We have to protect our race. We have to show we care. We have the VOICE that GOD gave to us and its about time someone HEARD it.

  18. 18 Candyce Harris September 11, 2007 at 1:57 pm

I have been hearing about this recently on the Michael Baisden show here in Detroit. I am not a lawyer, but after reading this article, I can see so many things wrong with this case. This is totally racially motivated. This is not a “prank”. Pranks are when we are left laughing, I am not laughing at all about a noose in a tree.

  19. 19 Effie17 September 20, 2007 at 2:59 pm

This is a very sad story i believe that Mycal bell and the other members of the Jena 6 should be set free becuz 2 me that was only self defense. Although, they were not phsically included in the situaton but we need to learn how to stand up for each other and all get alone and agree with wats right. The problem is not color or him or her its within ourselves, we are the problem we need to learn how to come correct about things and solve our own problem a color is still a color and will always remain the same whether we fight over it 2day or 2morrow freedom and equality is what matters and we should all stand tall for that right!!

  20. 20 madmud1 September 23, 2007 at 9:56 am

I’m Just Curious and a bit confused. about the whole Jena Deal, I am a gay white male, and I too live around prejudice people, but just because someone hangs a rebel flag or calls me a homosexual, fudge packer or so on, It does not to give me the right to go out and beat the you no what out of them. And the deal with the ropes, yes it should be handled as a hate crime possibly vandalism and Punishment and should be dealt with according by the law and School system. Example: If someone would go in my yard and spray paint my shed with graffiti and they write homosexual words all over it, the least they would be charged with is vandalism, and would most likely get probation or community service and fines or maybe nothing, but even then, Even If I new who the person was that did it! does not give me the right to go out and beat any person that I thought was a homosexual hater or the actual Person that did it. There is no way of beating the charge of beating the crap out of them! assault is assault! attempted murder is attempted murder, by saying that I didn’t know better, I just wanted justice done. Get real people. Then I am no better then they are, taking the law in my own hands is not right no matter what anyone protest or thinks. You can not compare a beating to a rope it is no way in this world, And Now just a word from the bible, It says that homosexuals will be judged! but until that time comes! It does not give you the right to judge me or any one else, In the Bible! it says thou shall not judge thy neighbor! Meaning gay, lesbian black white Jewish Hispanic or anyone else, You can not change white to black, black to white, gay to straight there is no way, So people Let god do it. Understand!

  21. 21 mlyon01 September 23, 2007 at 2:35 pm

    Hello Madmud1, it’s Michael Lyon

I’m not surprised you’re talking about the schoolyard fight as though it was a simple one-to-one response to the nooses, because that’s certainly the way it’s been portrayed in the press. In fact, there’s a much broader background of racism in Jena, particularly recently:

A young white man pulled a rifle on two young black men. Fortunately, nobody was hurt, as the black men were able to wrestle the gun away from the white man, but later the two black men were charged by police, while nothing happened to the white man.

There was also an incident recently where a black student was beaten up a party attended largely by whites, and no action was taken.

The school the Jena6 students recommended against suspending the Jena6 students, but the school board refused this recommendation and suspended the six. It turned out the school board’s attorney insisting on the suspension was also the district attorney in the Jena6 trial.

Mychal Bell, the only one of the Jena6 to face trial so far, was convicted by an all-white jury that contained at least one friend to the District Attorney. Bell’s attorney did not challenge the all-white jury.

When KKKer David Duke ran for office in recent years he got upwards of 60 pct of the vote in the county Jena is in.

So what I’m suggesting is that is not a simple case of a noose versus a beating. The noose is part of a racist structure running the town, and these incredible charges being sought for a simple schoolyard fight are part of this racist structure. The victim, though banged up, did, after all attend a school social event the night of the fight.

I also invite you to more seriously consider the significance of the noose. You say you wouldn’t beat someone up if someone made an anti-gay comment to you, but an anti-gay comment, though reprehensible, is comparable to flying the confederate flag. It’s a symbol of white supremacy, and racist attitudes, but it is not a direct racist death threat the way a noose is.

    Thank you for writing.

    Michael Lyon

WHEN THE US MEDIA SAID NO MORE INJUSTICE !

WHEN THE US CONGRESS DENIED THE MASSES OF AMERICANS THEIR POSSIBLE FREEDOMS!Currently there are reported to be 100,000 falsely imprisoned Americans living along with the estimated 2,000,000 US prison population nationwide.America now has the very unique distinction of not only being rated the #1 in the World for having the largest prison population, but America also has the distinct rating of having the largest wrongfully imprisoned prison population in the World as well. Our US Congress affords themselves all the perks and salary most Americans could only dream about, but ask anyone of these Leaders Of The Free World to protect our Middle Class or Working Poor Americans from continuing to be falsely imprisoned endless decades due to the lack of federal appeal legal counsel being afforded them, and you just might be thought of as being crazy? The masses of the American people could never come close to ever being able to burden these federal appeal legal costs for themselves or for a family member, and should not need a lobbying group for this basic right of legal protection to be afforded them! Our Poster Child of this exact neglect by our US Congress is this young man named Manny Gonzales.Anyone interested in reading first hand how our US Congress is willing to allow our judicial system to continue keeping this now 21 year old young man imprisoned for 27 mandatory years for frightening someone with a hand gun(not even injuring the so called victim,) without affording him federal appeal legal counsel to properly be able to defend himself in our Federal courts of Appeal? Manny Gonzales The kid that everyone forgot in the CA prison system can be entered into any WWW search engine for the judicial ride of ones life! Tens of thousands of other Americans being imprisoned in the US are facing this same lack of legal counsel everyday, and with this lack of legal counsel being denied their right to new retrials, which in turn forces many of them to remain endless decades in the prison systems of the wealthiest country in the world! Just like the German people prior WW2,the American people and our National Media have not felt any concern or interest to speak out about our country having so many of our fellow Middle Class and Working Poor citizens being falsely imprisoned and not even being afforded the proper Federal Appeal legal counsel to assist in their attempt at exonerating themselves!
We thank all of you Worldwide who have also had a concern and are interested with this injustice being changed in the American judicial system for assisting all of us(who are also just interested volunteers ourselves)with your time and computer skills in posting this article on the WWW anywhere you think it might make positive change!

GIVE THEM LIBERTY OR GIVE THEM LAWYERS !!!

WHICH AMERICANS ARE INTERESTED IN PROTECTING OUR INNOCENT US PRISON INMATES RIGHT TO BEING AFFORDED PROPER LEGAL REPRESENTATION IN OUR US COURTS?

TAX CUT$ , EARMARK$, TRILLION $$ WAR, BILLIONS IN FOREIGN AID, AND WERE TOLD THERE IS NO $$ FOR LAWYERS TO PROPERLY REPRESENT OUR MIDDLE CLASS AND WORKING POOR AMERICANS ? ?

We have all been made publicly aware that Americas 100,000 innocent and falsely imprisoned American inmates nationwide, have no real assistance or protections afforded them by our US Congress concerning their federal retrial appeals!

How in the world can affluent guilty American defendants with proper federal appeal legal counsel, have the greater advantage of receiving new retrials being granted them from our US Federal Judges, then the tens of thousands of innocent poor American prison inmates who are being forced to represent their own federal appeal legal cases from prison??

Innocent but poor prison inmates who are being denied new federal appeal retrials in mass all across our nation, have never had anyone in America interested in focusing on their horror of being falsely imprisoned for decades in the wealthiest nation in the world. Without proper legal assistance being afforded these innocent prison inmates, they will never really ever be capable of exonerating themselves through the federal appeal judicial process!

We ask every caring and loving American to just attempt to put yourself into this same exact situation for just one minute in your mind. Being falsely imprisoned in an American prison for 25 or 30 years without the US Congress affording you proper legal counsel to ever have the slightest opportunity to possibly exonerate yourself using the federal appeal process.

Lawyers for poor Americans has just recently begun our national educational plea for the hearts and souls of the American people concerning this injustice, and our mission of exposing this injustice and freeing all of our innocent fellow Americans from our national prisons, will not stop until our US Congress legislates the needed and proper funding to bring our innocent and missing American prison inmates back home !!!

****WHEN THE US INNOCENT WERE ABANDONED BY THE GUILTY ****
The prison experts have reported that there are 100,000 innocent Americans currently being falsely imprisoned along with the 2,300,000 total US prison population nationwide.
Since our US Congress has never afforded poor prison inmates federal appeal legal counsel for their federal retrials, they have effectively closed the doors on these tens of thousands of innocent citizens ever being capable of possibly exonerating themselves to regain their freedom through being granted new retrials.

This same exact unjust situation was happening in our Southern States when poor and mostly uneducated Black Americans were being falsely imprisoned for endless decades without the needed educational skills to properly submit their own written federal trial appeals.

This devious and deceptive judicial process of making our poor and innocent prison inmates formulate and write their own federal appeal legal cases for possible retrials on their state criminal cases,is still in effect today even though everyone in our US judicial system knows that without proper legal representation, these tens of thousands of innocent prison inmates will be denied their rightful opportunities of ever being granted new trials from our federal appeal judges!!

Sadly, the true US *legal* Federal Appeal situation that occurs when any of our uneducated American prison inmates are forced to attempt to submit their own written Federal Appeals (from our prisons nationwide) without the assistance of proper legal counsel, is that they all are in reality being denied their legitimate rights for Habeas Corpus and will win any future Supreme Court Case concerning this injustice!

For our judicial system and our US Congressional Leaders Of The Free World to continue to pretend that this is a real and fair opportunity for our American Middle Class and Working Poor Citizens, only delays the very needed future change of Federal Financing of all these Federal appeals becoming a normal formula of Our American judicial system.

It was not so very long ago that Public Defenders became a Reality in this country.Prior that legal reality taking place, their were also some who thought giving anyone charged with a crime a free lawyer was a waste of taxpayers $$.
